Severin Vaadeland, his wife Karen and 4 kids (Pete, Arne, Freda and Clara) took homestead up in this area in 1929, coming from Norway, via Minnesota and the Weldon, SK area. Ruben was born on the kitchen table in 1933. Kate came along a few years later, and the first Lazy SV family was complete.
Work was done with oxen and horses. The Vaadeland's raised purebred Shorthorns until the very early '70's.
After taking over the operation Ruben married Darlene in 1965. The second Lazy SV family started when Gord was born in 1967, followed by Greg in '68, Ellie in '71 and Errol in '75.
The Lazy SV is still in full operation. In fact, it's still expanding. Errol and his wife Angela look after things there.
A new direction for the family ranching business came when Gord, his wife Sheila and son Jake decided to start hosting guests on the ranch. Gord had always felt that, given the ranch's unique location and proximity to Prince Albert National Park, there was an opportunity to do more with the ranch. So he sold his cattle to Errol and Ruben, bought some more horses and Sturgeon River Ranch was born.
The 2 ranches operate complimentary to each other. In fact, it's one ranch with 2 different components. The 4th generation is well on its way and it looks like the ranch is in good hands for many years to come.
